Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson stunned critics last night by making an ‘enchanting’ and ‘assured’ Broadway debut. The blonde actress, who hails from New York City, dons a brunette wig to play a teenage orphan in the revival of Arthur Miller’s 1956 tragedy A View From The Bridge. After meek Broadway performances from other Hollywood stars Julia Roberts and Katie Holmes in recent years, critics were pleasantly surprised when Johansson put on a ‘touching’ performance as Catherine.
Catherine is an orphan living in Fifties Brooklyn with her aunt and uncle – played by Jessica Hecht and Liev Schreiber – whose life is transformed when her aunt’s two cousins Rodolpho and Marco arrive illegally from Italy. Much to the chagrin of Catherine’s uncle Eddie, who has a destructive obsession with his niece, she begins to fall in love with Rodolpho (Morgan Spector).
