Netflix almost made major cuts to Wednesday that would have ruined the show. A significant part of Wednesday’s appeal was Wednesday Addams’ (Jenna Ortega) deadpan nature and morbid sense of humor. However, Netflix executives originally suggested altering this aspect of Wednesday’s character.
Wednesday’s Darkness Is Key To Why The Character (& Show) Works
Dark and macabre humor has always been a part of Wednesday Addams’ appeal, most notably in the ’90s Addams Family movies with Christina Ricci’s portrayal of the character. Though Jenna Ortega’s version of Wednesday differed in a few ways from Ricci’s, Wednesday’s darkness, a crucial part of her character, thankfully, remained. Jenna Ortega conveyed Wednesday’s deadpan nature and morbid humor brilliantly.
Netflix Needs To Keep Wednesday Dark (Despite Her Becoming More Heroic)
In Wednesday season 1, Wednesday started off being apathetic and uncaring towards the people around her. However, her character developed empathy, and she eventually risked her life for her fellow Nevermore students in the Wednesday season 1 finale. However, Wednesday’s new heroic nature doesn’t mean her character should lose her edge in Wednesday season 2. In Wednesday season 1, episode 7, “If You Don’t Woe Me by Now,” Enid remarked that Wednesday had mellowed out. Wednesday corrected Enid, saying, “Never. More like evolving.” Netflix should stay true to this quote and allow Wednesday’s character to evolve while preserving her darker nature.
