The upcoming horror comedy is based on the classic The Addams Family television series by American cartoonist Charles Addams. The cult classic tells the story of the title Addams family, a wealthy and aristocratic clan who are very eccentric and have a penchant for the macabre.
The Addams Family has been a presence on TV and in movies for generations. Since its debut as an animated TV show in 1964, The Addams Family has gone through several adaptations, both on television and in theaters. For the past 58 years, it has had four different TV series, and five feature films — not to mention books, video games, and more. A new television show is right around the corner to round out that list, as Netflix’s Wednesday premieres on November 23. With showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar at the helm, Wednesday will focus on one of the Addams children, Wednesday, as she attends Nevermore Academy and tries to control her emerging psychic power amid mysteries.
I think they’re such different tonal beasts. I mean, Wednesday, this show is so much more comedic than Smallville. But certainly it was about finding the emotion behind both these characters. How do you add complexity and dimension to Clark Kent? And it’s a similar challenge here. How do you add complexity and dimension and emotion to someone who literally has no emotion? They are very, very different, but they have similar character flaws.
How Wednesday Will Benefit From Smallville
Gough and Millar and have been writing partners for over 20 years and were showrunners on Smallville in the early 2000s. The show told the origin story of Superman, as a teenage Clark Kent battled through adolescence and growing up in a small town while trying to hide his superpowers.
